X Necklace

x peg necklace, sterling silver, oxidation, 2011
This necklace along with other work from 2011 will be shown this weekend at Hamilton's SUPERCRAWL, Saturday September 10th, James Street North.
My work will be on display along side SW Austin paintings at our booth Ashton Austin Art. We are North of Cannon street and South of Mulberry street on the West side. The event runs 1pm onwards and there are many, many artist to see and hear - three stages, plus food, plus artists, plus other surprises I am sure as there often is on James Street North.

There are other events going on in the city the same day, so plan your route and parking. For more info see The Hamilton Spectator and " it might get loud".

Set

Bench Shot of work in progress 2011
Earrings and necklaces awaiting final touches.
My method of working involves creating many pieces simultaneously. This is partly because I make matching earrings or cuff links that require I work in multiples, but often this happens because the process is lengthy and I get a lot of ideas while working on one thing and have to start another before the inspiration slips away. Eventually I finish about 90% of what I start, but there are always pieces that never make it through all the refining and surface treatments and have to wait until the next show or exhibition before they are fully realized. Pictured above are some new 'x' earrings.

Getting Ready

Bench Shot of tools 2011.
I am gearing up for the Beehive Craft Fair that takes place this Friday and Saturday. It is a new summer event but Friday night is the monthly Art Crawl night so it should be a great evening. If you haven't visited Hamilton for this event yet this may be just the night to try it out - there is always lots to see and hear.

Loopi Earrings

loopi earrings, sterling, 2009
Although I have always had an attraction to spiraling forms in my work, the initial inspiration for the loopi series came from concepts in architecture by Frank Gehry upon the completion of the Baroque Stairs at the AGO in 2008.

Don't Fret

cufflinks: sterling, ozidation, 2011
I made just the thing for the musician with a french cuff shirt and a fancy occasion. These are, to date, one of a kind.

Hepworth Inspired Cufflinks

sterling silver, 14kt gold, purple heart wood, 2009.
This is the pair that really started my love of cufflinks. It was one of those pieces that just came about in drawings and then I had to make it simply to find out how to put it together. It was the first piece that I used the purple heart in and the shapes were inspired by the sculptor Barbara Hepworth. I love the colour of purple heart and am intrigued with the contrast of it with silver.

Le Microphone

Le Microphone, Charm, sterling, steel, copper, 2010
This microphone won't carry your voice, it is only 2cm long, but you can wear it on your charm bracelet or on a chain as a pendant. It is part of the Music Series and this original one was made as a gift for someone who enjoys singing. It is made in a retro style loosely based on a microphone we used back in the 80's.

The Rivet Series

Rivet Bracelet, sterling, 2010
The Rivet Series is a style that I return to every few months to continue and sometimes expand the series. Rivets are a great cold connection, meaning I don't have to solder the parts of the metal when attaching them together, instead I delicately hammer the parts in place with wire as dowels. This allows me to polish and finish the elements of the piece in a different way than if I had to heat it. Though, I do find my interest in the aesthetics of rivets becomes the more important part of the design.
imprint series, sterling silver, 2010
Sometimes bold and uncomplicated is just the right style.
